Dream Catcher Crafts For Children

Decorate your dreamcatcher with feathers and beads.

A dreamcatcher is a Native American decoration that is intended to be hung over your bed or where you sleep in order to direct bad dreams away from you and capture good dreams and channel them to you. Children can make simple dreamcatchers for their rooms using basic craft supplies.

Paper Plate Dreamcatcher

Use a paper plate to make a simple dreamcatcher with yarn and beads. Adults or older children can cut out the center of the plate with scissors, leaving a 2-inch-wide hoop to serve as the base of the dreamcatcher. Punch holes about 1 to 2 inches apart along the inside edge of the border with a paper punch. Let children weave yarn back and forth through the holes. Set out beads so that children can string beads onto the yarn as they wish to decorate their dreamcatchers. Tie a knot in the end of the yarn to secure it to the plate. Glue feathers to the bottom of the plate with white craft glue if desired.

Twig Dreamcatcher

Look for a thin, flexible twig to create a rustic dreamcatcher. Bend the twig into a circle and secure the ends with craft wire. This step is best done by adults or older children as young children may experience difficulty bending the twig into the proper shape. Tie a piece of string to the twig and allow children to wrap the string around the opposite side of the twig and continue weaving the string back and forth, wrapping it around the twig at each location to secure the string. Decorate the twig dreamcatcher with beads and feathers.

Embroidery Hoop Dreamcatcher

An embroidery hoop simplifies the process of making a dreamcatcher because of its inner and outer rings. Instruct children to wind string, yarn or craft wire around the inner hoop. When they are satisfied with the design, place the inner ring inside the outer ring and tighten the embroidery hoop to hold everything in place. Wooden embroidery hoops may be painted before you begin crafting the dreamcatcher with acrylic paints.

Coat Hanger Dreamcatcher

A coat hanger dreamcatcher includes its own handy hook for hanging. Bend the body of the hanger into a circle and wrap strips of fabric or yarn around the wire hanger to give it a padded appearance. Crisscross pieces of yarn or string back and forth the form the design of your dreamcatcher. When it is finished, bend the hook of the hanger to form a loop and hang it on your wall.
