Easy Animal Arts & Crafts For Children

Children's love for animals is fostered when they make crafts associated with them.

Two things children love are animals and crafts. Perhaps the intrigue that surrounds animals--they are different from humans--captures the attention of children. The beauty and majesty of these beings also attracts children. Likely the different textures and the sense of pride associated with completing a project draw children to craft making. One thing is for sure: Children find the combination of animals and crafts doubly entertaining.

Paper Plate Peacock

Children can create a peacock craft with a paper plate and their footprint. Have children dip one foot in blue finger paint--excluding their toes. Have them place their footprint on the paper plate by putting their heel in the center of the plate and the ball of the foot near the edge of the plate. When the footprint has dried, have children create a tail for their peacock by gluing colorful feathers around the footprint. Have them create a beak by cutting a triangle out of orange construction paper and attaching it to the footprint. The peacock is completed with two googly eyes.

Footprint Giraffe

This craft also relies on children's footprints, as well as their forearms. On yellow construction paper, trace children's feet while they are wearing shoes. On another piece of yellow construction paper, help them trace their forearms. Have them cut out their footprints and forearms. Form the head and neck of a giraffe by attaching one side of the footprint to the cutout of the forearm--the heel should be the top of the head. Children can create spots on their giraffe by dipping their fingers in brown paint and stamping them on the head and neck. Have children make a mane for the giraffe by cutting fringes into a strip of brown construction paper and attaching it to the back of the giraffe's neck. Cut two horns and ears out of yellow construction paper, and help children glue them on the head of the animal. Two googly eyes glued to the head bring the giraffe to life.

Handprint Crabs

In this craft project, handprints are used to create crabs. Provide children with pieces of blue construction paper, which represents the ocean. Have them dip both hands in red finger paint. Instruct them to stamp their handprints on the paper with their palms next to each other and their fingers spread out. Glue a googly eye on each thumbprint. Children can embellish the ocean scene by adding glitter, painting white waves and applying stickers of shells.
