Easy Kids' Poultry Crafts

Holidays naturally lend themselves to spending extra time with the kids, which you can spend in part on crafts, a popular and inexpensive parent-child activity. Fall and Thanksgiving inevitably lead to turkey crafts, many of which are quick and easy, and a big hit with kids.

Turkey Treat Holder

Crafting turkey treat holders is an entertaining activity that also results in a practical, yet creative, addition to your Thanksgiving dinner. You can use these turkey treat holders in individual place settings or combined as a centerpiece. Formed around a small clay pot from a craft store, each turkey treat holder can be filled with candy, nuts and other small treats.

Cut out four feather shapes from brown, orange, yellow and red foam craft sheets. Additionally, cut out a brown oval for the head and orange heart-shaped feet. Glue the feathers on the back of the small clay pot, glue the feet on the bottom toward the front and attach the head to the front. You can draw eyes and a beak on the head, or attach googly eyes. Fill the pot with yummies.

Hands-and-Feet Turkey

If you want something to hang on the refrigerator or on the children's bedroom door, this hands-and-feet turkey is perfect. Take tan, red, orange and yellow construction paper and trace two child's hands on each one. Trace two child's shoes onto brown construction paper. Cut them all out. Children may need help with scissors here, depending on their age.

Place the two foot shapes on top of each other, with the heels together and the toe area fanning out in opposite directions to form the body, and glue them. Cut out turkey feet from the orange scraps and glue them to the bottom of the body. Arrange the orange, yellow and red hands together to form the tail. Alternate the colors, so that it looks natural and varied. Glue them behind the body. Take the two tan hands and put them on either side of the body to make the wings, gluing them in place.

Leaf Turkey

This leaf turkey craft has added recreational value because it involves a nature walk. Gather fall leaves, as well as a pine cone for each turkey you will make. Try to pick leaves that have nice autumn colors. You can press them for a few days if you'd like to, but it will not hurt the craft to use the leaves straight off the ground; they will simply get a little crunchy within a few weeks. Glue the leaves onto a piece of paper in a fan shape, like the tail feathers of a turkey. Glue the pine cone in the center for the body and attach googly eyes, or make eyes out of scraps of paper. You can also add an orange beak and a red wobbler.
