Making your own pH drops is a good way to conduct experiments for projects. Basic chemistry requires knowledge of alkalinity and acidity, which pH measures. You can make a pH solution that you can use to find out whether an object is acidic or alkaline. Cabbage leaves have a unique pigment called anthocyanins that change color in the presence of an alkaline or acidic object, so you can use the inherent pigment in red cabbage leaves as a pH indicator.
Instructions
1. Grate a few cabbage leaves from a red cabbage and place them into a cooking pot.
2. Add one cup of water to the pot and bring it to a boil. Let it boil for thirty minutes.
3. Allow the water to cool inside the pot.
4. Drain the water, which should be dark purple, into a container. Throw away the boiled leaves.
5. Use a dropper to suck up some of the dark purple solution.
6. Apply a few drops of the dark purple water to the object you wish to experiment upon. If the dark purple water turns pink, the object is acidic. If it turns green, it is alkaline. If it stays the same color, the object's pH is neutral.
