Steps To Make Native American Indian Bead Art

Dream catchers are traditional to Native American folklore. They are circle-shaped nets placed above a bed to protect against bad dreams. The web is meant to capture the bad dreams, and the feathers dangling on the bottom are to direct the good dreams toward the sleeping individual. The hoop is a symbol of unity and strength in Native American culture, and the dream catcher typically is adorned with decorative beads.

Instructions

Dream Catcher

1. Make a hoop. Cut about 12 inches of bark-covered wire, which may be found at craft stores, and shape it into a circle. Fasten the ends together with a piece of thin wire.

2. Make the net. Tie one end of the twine to the hoop. Insert two or three beads onto the twine. Wrap the twine onto an opposite side of the hoop, then add more beads. Repeat these steps to make a criss-crossed starlike pattern with the twine. Remember to leave a hole in the center, to let the positive dreams through. When finished adding beads, tie the end of the twine to the hoop.

3. Attach feathers. Cut two or three pieces of twine and tie them to the bottom of the hoop. To each piece, add two or three beads, then a feather and knot securely. Add a string at the top for hanging, and your dream catcher is ready to be placed near your bed.
