How To Look After A Moroccan Henna Light

Moroccan henna lamps are constructed from sections of tanned goatskin that are stretched and secured to a metal base. The shade is decorated with intricate henna designs and treated with oils to prevent cracks and discoloration. The designs on Moroccan henna lamps vary by region and add a bit of Arabian culture to your living or dining room. Caring for your Moroccan henna lamp properly ensures the shade doesn't dry out, crack or shrink.

Instructions

1. Display your Moroccan henna lamp away from direct sunlight or other heat sources, including radiators or fireplaces. Heat dries out the goatskin shade, causing discoloration and shrinkage.

2. Install a low-wattage, fluorescent bulb in the lamp. This ensures the shade doesn't warp from the excessive heat emitted by a 100-watt bulb.

3. Wipe off the goatskin lampshade weekly with a microfiber cloth of feather duster. This removes dust, dirt and debris that can eventually discolor the lampshade.

4. Apply a thin coating of mineral, mink or neatsfoot oil to the Moroccan henna lamp shade at least once a month. Work the oil onto both sides of the lampshade until an evenly distributed layer is formed. Allow the oil to soak into the lampshade for 24 hours in a cool, dark space before using the lamp.
