Celebrate cardinals with some creative craft projects.
When we think of cardinals, we typically envision birds of an impressive red color. Aside from being colorful, cardinals are strong-billed, seed-eating birds that come in a variety of different species and can be found in many world locations. Incorporate these birds into your next craft project for an entertaining tribute to cardinals the world over.
Ornaments and Window Hangings
What better way to display a cardinal craft than to have it hang in mid-air as though it were perched or in flight? Consider creating some ornaments for a holiday tree or to hang in a window in your home. Make a bird model using materials like clay or paper mache, and then add colorful red and black paints to the design. For textural elements, glue red feathers onto the model. For a cardinal that perches, attach a twig to the bird's feet. Or, for a bird in flight, make a design where the bird's wings are extended. Hang your ornaments with clear fishing line.
Cardinal Clothing
If the color red suits you, you could most certainly incorporate cardinals into a crafty clothing project. For instance, decorate a red sweatshirt or sweater to look like a cardinal's face; paint a beak on the center of the front of the shirt and add some eyes above. You could also make a cardinal hat with a red baseball cap. The brim of the cap can act as the cardinal's beak, while the base of the cap can be used to paint the bird's eyes. Glue on some red feathers for extra texture.
Cardinal Cards
For a bit of a play on words, put the "card" in "cardinal" for your craft project. Cut out cardinal-shaped pieces of card stock or another variety of sturdy paper; use red-colored paper, or simply paint or color the finished card. Decorate the cards with feathers, paints or red glitter for added flair, and then use them anytime you need a card, whether it's a for a birthday, thank-you note or postcard. Also, decorate a deck of playing cards with images of cardinals if you want to continue with the play on words.
Giving Back to Cardinals
Pay homage to cardinals with a craft that will benefit the birds. For instance, you could make a birdhouse with wood or recycled materials and decorate it with images of cardinals using paints and other decorative materials. Hang the finished birdhouse in your yard for the cardinals to use at their leisure. Similarly, you could decorate a bird feeder or birdbath with images of cardinals; construct your own for a more ambitious project, or obtain a manufactured model that can be decorated with paints and other materials. Place the finished product in your yard, or give it as a gift to another cardinal fan.
