Balloon Crafts For Children

A group of colorful balloons

Balloons--whether filled with air or helium--create a festive atmosphere to any party and automatically bring happiness to children. Balloons can also be used for a variety of craft projects for kids. Because balloons are inexpensive and easy to find, they are ideal for any kids party or even a rainy afternoon at home.

Balloon Beanbags

Making beanbags out of balloons is an activity that children that will enjoy. Balloon beanbags are also a great toy for kids to play with after they make the craft. You can make the beanbags by filling small round balloons with raw beans until the balloons are tight and slightly squishy. Add extra outer layers of balloons for extra durability. Each child can make the beanbags in their favorite colors, then juggle them or play catch with a friend.

Balloon Animals

Balloons make perfect animal crafts. Kids can use balloons as the body or head for the animal, then make the feathers and facial features with other craft supplies. You can make a balloon turkey by cutting the turkey face, neck and feathers out of construction paper, then decorating the face and feathers with markers, pom-poms or googly eyes. To make a balloon spider, you would use a black balloon for the body and black pipe cleaners for the legs. These make great decorations for Halloween parties.

Balloon Boat

A balloon boat is easy to make using balloons, string and a piece of Styrofoam. To make this craft, blow up a balloon so it is approximately 24 inches long. Tie the ends together so the balloon is in an oval shape. Attach the balloon on top of the Styrofoam oval by punching holes in the Styrofoam and stringing the two objects together. When the boat is set in water, it will float like a real boat. Children will love this balloon craft because they will feel like they are making a real toy. It is also a great way to teach them about density and what types of materials are lighter in water.

Self Portrait

Kids can also use a balloon to make a self portrait. Have them choose their favorite color balloon as a head, then use other craft supplies such as pom-poms and stickers to make a face. String or construction paper work great for hair. Making a balloon is a great way to spark a child's creativity and help him learn how to express himself through art.
