Vases aren't just for flowers.
The traditional vase of flowers is the dependable and foolproof centerpiece for your table, yet sometimes it can be a little boring and unimaginative. Add something of interest to the flowers, or toss the flower idea completely and fill the vase with something unexpected and in theme with your event.
Balloons
Helium balloons go well with parties and celebrations, and when you arrange them properly they can replace a bouquet of flowers in a vase. Secure the ends of the balloon ribbons or strings to a weight so your centerpiece does not fly away.
Candles
A transparent vase can double as a votive to create a flickering centerpiece. Float the candle on water in the vase, or add sand to the bottom of the vase and use the sand as a candleholder.
Crafty Bouquet
Create individual one-of-a-kind centerpieces to fit in each vase. You might create a bouquet of flowers from buttons and felt, or a crafty stork for a baby shower centerpiece. You are only limited by your imagination and crafting skill.
Edible
For a sweet and edible centerpiece, fill the vase with decorative and tasty candy. It might be a bundle of red licorice, a vase full of jellybeans, or lollipops arranged like flowers. Instead of candy, create an edible fruit arrangement or simply fill a transparent vase with small lemons and limes, which will come in handy near the bar.
Feathers
Long feathers, such as colorful ostrich or peacock feathers make for an attractive replacement for a flower arrangement.
Fish
Turn a transparent vase into a fish bowl, by filling the bottom of the vase with water that has been treated with tap water conditioner to make it safe for fish and adding one small, hardy freshwater fish. Make a flower arrangement secured in foam, and fit it into the top of the vase.
Flags
While American flags are festive additions to a July 4th centerpiece, use flags to liven centerpieces for other occasions. For example, if it is a going-away party for a friend traveling to Spain, dress up the centerpiece with small Spanish flags.
Leaves
Decorate the centerpieces with vividly colored fall leaves.
Pine Cones
Fill a transparent vase with small pine cones. If it is the holiday season, add small red and green glass balls to the vase for a festive arrangement.
Pinwheels
The shape of a playful pinwheel is similar to a flower, making it a suitable addition to a vase of flowers, or you can use a number of pinwheels instead of flowers.
Rocks and Such
Fill a transparent vase with interesting rocks, beads, imitation pearls or colorful small glass ornaments.
Shells
Create a beach feel for the party by incorporating seashells in the centerpiece. The arrangement of the shells will depend on the shape, size and transparency of the vase.
