Turn hand-prints into birds by giving the prints eyes and a beak.
Paper bird crafts are great for children learning about birds in school, kids who already have an interest in birds, celebrating holidays and rainy days when the kids are bored and driving you crazy. You can use all kinds of different paper for bird crafts -- paper plates, construction paper, card stock or empty paper rolls.
Paper Plate Mask
Turn a plain white paper plate into a bird mask. Cut out two eye holes in the plate then decorate the plate to look like the bird of your choice, such as a toucan, parrot or duck. Use crayons or markers to give the mask the correct coloring and markings of the bird. You can even glue on feathers for a more realistic look. Make a beak out of construction paper and affix it to the center of the paper plate. Attach a piece of string or elastic to the mask so you can wear it. Alternatively, glue a craft stick to the bottom of the mask so you can hold the mask up to your face.
Holiday Bird Crafts
Make bird crafts out of paper to celebrate the holidays. Cut out chicks from yellow construction paper then glue them on a homemade Easter card. Use black-and-white construction paper to make penguins in celebration of winter holidays. Or cut out cardinals from red card stock and glue them to a piece of twine to make a Christmas garland to string over a mantle or doorway. Using different colored construction or card stock, construct a paper turkey. Turn the paper turkeys into place cards for Thanksgiving dinner.
Hand-Traced Birds
By tracing your hand onto paper, you can create all different kinds of birds. With your fingers spread out, trace your hand on a slight angle and draw a bird face onto the thumb part. Turn this hand-print into a turkey by coloring the finger parts orange, yellow and brown. Or transform it into a peacock by coloring the finger parts blue, green and yellow. You can also trace your hand with your fingers together and thumb extended. Give the thumb part a face. Draw water around the bird to make a swan or duck, or draw a nest around the bird. Color the hand-print pink and give it legs to make it flamingo. Turn it into a ostrich by giving the hand-print legs and coloring the head white and the back feathers black.
Toilet Paper Birds
Recycle empty toilet paper rolls into bird crafts. Cover the paper roll with construction paper. Use fun bright colors if you're making a tropical bird, such as a parrot or macaw, or neutral-colored paper if you're making a duck or sparrow. Cut tear-drop shapes out of construction paper for feathers and glue them to the side of the tube to make wings. Make beaks and feet out of black, yellow or orange paper and attack them to the paper roll. Draw on eyes.
