Glitter, sequins and feathers are commonly used to decorate calaveras.
Calaveras -- or sugar skulls -- are an important part of Dia de los Muertos, the annual Mexican celebration of the dead that runs from November 1 to November 3. Calaveras -- a tradition brought to Mexico from Italian missionaries in the 1600s -- are commonly decorated with all sorts of odds and ends, from frosting to glitter to feathers. They represent the souls of the dead and are often left as offerings on the graves of the departed.
Instructions
1. Cut a 1/4-inch hole in the bottom of a plastic cake-decorating bag, and slide a decorating tip down into this hole. Adjust the hole and the tip as needed. Fill the bag with 1/2 cup frosting. You may need to use a spatula to push the frosting down into the bag. Prepare a bag for every color of frosting you wish to use on your calaveras.
2. Test the tip of your frosting bag on a paper towel to make sure you are happy with the way the tip is dispensing frosting. Practice squeezing the frosting, varying the pressure you apply to the frosting bag. This will help you be more precise when you decorate your calaveras.
3. Squeeze the frosting bag to create designs on your calaveras. Push the frosting out carefully to make your designs more precise. Calaveras are typically very bright and colorful, so make full use of your frosting color variety.
4. Affix feathers, foil, glitter and sequins to the calaveras with dabs of frosting to add extra flair. Traditional sugar-skull designs include tattoolike patterns, heart shapes and flower details.
