How You Can Draw A Roc (Giant Bird)

Artists have freedom to depict the mythical roc in various ways.

The roc is a giant bird that first appeared in Arabian and Indian myths. The ancient Indian epic "Mahabharata" describes the roc as being large enough to carry off an elephant. Since ancient times, this legendary predator bird has captured the imaginations of people the world over. Certainly giant birds of prey existed in prehistoric times. Whether these beasts could have survived long enough to be observed by humans is debatable. It's fun to let your imagination run wild and depict your own giant bird in flight.

Instructions

1. Could the roc have existed in preshistoric times? It's a possibility.

Study other paintings or drawings of rocs. Study pictures of large birds of prey, such as eagles or hawks. Observe the fierce look of their eyes. Study their sharp talons and wide wingspans.

2. Draw a long oval at a 45-degree angle extending upward toward the right corner of the page. Draw a large scalene triangle in the middle of the oval with the widest side facing left. Draw a small thin rectangle extending from the left side of the oval. Sketch the left side of this rectangle tapering and meeting to form the tail feathers.

3. Draw a scalene triangle only partially visible behind the first wing. Draw a small vertical oval under the wings, descending slightly forward. Draw your oval slightly overlapping with the body itself. Draw a second oval, partially visible behind the first. Draw the roc's talons on the ends of these.

4. Draw a small triangle at the front of the body for the beak. Round out the top side and sketch a slight hook to the tip. Add a side nostril. Draw another, smaller triangle underneath to depict an open beak. Draw a small circle for the eye. Shade in the eye, pressing heavily with the pencil to make it dark.

5. Draw the rounded feathers on the backside of the first wing. Add detail to the feathers. Add vertical lines to the tail feathers to further define them. Add shading and other detail to the body. Add lines to the talons to give them character.

6. Round and smooth any sharp edges. Shade and blend or erase any unwanted lines.
