Suggestions For Fairy Crafts

Children and adults alike will escape to a magical fantasy world, full of wonderment, when creating fairy crafts. Fairies inspire imagination and creativity, so there are no set styles or rules that apply when creating fairy crafts. A variety of materials are used to create the fairy dwellings and accessories.

Fairy Garden Houses

Create miniature fairy houses in your garden or to display in your home. Use items found in nature and craft stores to create your little homes. Craft stores sell birdhouses in all shapes and sizes to decorate by hot gluing sticks, leaves, and small stones to cover the walls and roof. Pull off the scales from pine cones and glue them on the roof for shingles. Alternatively, create your fairy home from scratch by gluing sticks to form the wall and roof structures. To add more accents to the houses for creating a fairy village, use flat stones to create pathways, assemble tiny picket fences with small sticks, and add miniature silk flowers and feathers around the outside of the houses for a pop of color and texture.

Fairy Wand and Headband

Create a fairy wand and flower headband for your child to use for dress up or for a Halloween costume. Purchase a child-sized, round, hard headband and glue silk flowers around the headband using hot glue. If a child is helping, the adult should apply the hot glue, or use white craft glue instead. Tie four satin ribbons onto the bottom edges on both sides of the headband, allowing the ribbons to flow down and fringe, and add a drop of glue to secure them. To create a fairy wand, glue a wooden star to the top of a 12-inch wood dowel. Have the child paint the wand with acrylic paint in her choice of colors. Brush clear-drying craft glue over the wand, and sprinkle glitter over the wet glue and allow it to dry. Tie satin ribbon fringes under the stars and add a drop of glue to secure. All the supplies needed are available for purchase at local or online craft stores.

Tissue Paper Flowers

Make a fairy flower arrangement out of tissue paper. To create each tissue paper flower, cut six pieces of colored tissue paper, 8 inches wide by 10 inches tall. Stack the papers and fold them into an accordion. Wrap the end of a green pipe cleaner around the center of the paper accordion and twist it closed. Create the flower petals by pulling each piece of colored tissue paper individually to open it out and fluff the paper to look like a flower. Make several flowers and put them together to form a fairy flower arrangement, tying them together with wide satin ribbons. Use the arrangement of flowers as a bouquet in a flowerpot, or use them individually as a dress-up hair ornament by fastening them behind the ear, to the hair, with a hair clip.

Clay Fairies and Accessories

Use polymer clay to make fairies and a variety of fairy accessories. Sculpt clay fairy figurines from your imagination. Make body parts, clothing and hair separately and assemble them together before baking. Alternatively, purchase clay molds of faces and bodies from craft stores for more realistic fairy sculptures. After baking and cooling, paint polymer clay with acrylic paints and then dust with fairy glitter. Sculpt tiny accessories for your fairy garden or village such as doors, tables and chairs, beds, home decor, and mushrooms for the garden path. Sculpt large fairy doors to sit along the bottom edge of trees.
