Native American Dreamcatcher Crafts For College Students

Prepare entertaining dream catcher crafts for your students.

Native Americans make dream catchers to catch negative dreams while they sleep, according to the Dream-Catcher website. When teaching your students about dream catchers, prepare hands-on crafts for them to do so they can have fun while learning about them at the same time. With a few craft supplies and some creative imaginations, you have everything you need to help your students make their very own dream catcher.

Coloring Crafts

Print dream catcher coloring pages to teach your students what dream catchers look like. Students can color the pictures using markers and crayon. Make the dream catcher sparkle by outlining it with glue and sprinkling with glitter. For another idea, give each student a blank sheet of paper and hang a large picture of a dream catcher on the wall. Have the children look at the picture and try to draw a dream catcher on the sheet of paper. Encourage the students to try their best by awarding a small prize to the best and most creative dream catchers.

Easy Crafts

For an easy dream catcher craft, give each student two paper plates and have him cut the inside out of both plates leaving only ring frames. Give each child a piece of net, such as a hair net, for the middle of the dream catcher. He must cut the net to fit the inside of the paper plate ring and tape or glue it to one of the plates. Glue or tape the paper plate together. Have them tie feathers to the end of a string and hang them from one end of the paper plate dream catcher. The children also can decorate the paper plate rings using crayons and markers.

Twine Crafts

Give the students a bendable twig that is approximately 12 inches long. Have them bend the twig in the shape of a circle and tape it together, and tie one end of a two-foot piece of twine to the twig. Wrap the twine around the other side of twig so the twine is going across the hoop. Keep doing this, making a net in the hoop with the twine. For added decoration, string beads on the twine while creating the webbing design. Tie feathers to the end of other pieces of twine to hang from the dream catcher.

Other Crafts

Using embroidery hoops, yarn and beads, weave the yarn around the hoop while putting beads on the yarn. Add the feathers to the bottom of the hoop and hang it up. Other items to use for weaving include thick fishing line, ribbon and hemp. Use pony beads or any type of beads with a hole in the middle. Large bags of craft feathers are available at most craft stores and online.
