Peacock feathers are an ideal icon to center a handmade necklace.
Peacock feathers are a natural choice for making a necklace. The vibrant hues of blue and green create an elegant, feminine accessory that looks amazing with a simple black top and hair pulled away from the face. With a few jewelry-making tools and some attention to detail, a homemade peacock feather necklace is a short project away.
Instructions
1. Trim the feather to the desired length. This length should be about 1 inch from the eye, leaving enough of the feather shaft to attach the silk thread.
2. Thread your needle with 1.5 feet of silk thread. Fold the thread in half and stick both ends of the thread through the eye of the needle. Only pull half of the folded thread through the eye so that you have the two ends of the thread on one side of the eye and a loop on the other side.
3. Push the needle through the shaft of the feather and pull the silk thread through so that a half rests on each side of the feather shaft.
4. Place the head pin on the back of the feather on top of the feather shaft, about a centimeter from the end of the shaft.
5. Pull the two ends of thread over the head pin and put through the loop of thread on the other side. Pull this loop tight so that the head pin is underneath this loop.
6. Wrap the two ends of thread around the feather shaft about 10 times to secure the head pin in place, keeping the needle on the end of the thread the entire time.
7. Push the needle through the feather shaft and pull it tight. Push the needle back through the feather shaft in the opposite direction and pull tight again. Cut the thread ends off.
8. Trim the head pin to measure 1/4 inch long from the end of the feather shaft. Bend the head pin into a circle with the remaining 1/4 inch of metal to form a loop.
9. Attach a jump ring to the head pin ring. Put one end of the jump ring through the head pin ring and use the pliers to close the jump ring closed, in a complete circle.
10. Thread a silver chain or craft cord through the jump ring to complete the necklace.
