Medieval Occasions Crafts For Children

A coat of arms.

If your child loves knights, princesses and things from long ago, he might appreciate the chance to experience the medieval times through his own hands. Crafts are a great way to experience what life might have been like hundreds of years ago, and it can give your child a new appreciation for the luxuries that we currently enjoy.

Illumination

Illumination is process where monks used create amazingly detailed and colorful pages to go in their religious texts. Show your child some examples of medieval illumination and and give him a coloring sheet that has outlines of those same figures. If he is feeling more ambitious, he may choose to try to duplicate the figures himself. People, animals and plants were all subjects for illumination.

Calligraphy

Calligraphy was used by monks and other educated people for correspondence and to inscribe books from the era. This elegant writing was often performed with a brush or a quill pen, but to avoid a mess, hand your child a felt-tip calligraphy pen instead. "Calligraphy for Kids" by Eleanor Winters is a good book to get your child started.

Butter Churning

If your child loves seeing how things were made, why not show him how butter was produced during the medieval times? Place room-temperature fresh cream in a jar and add a marble for extra agitation. Close the jar and have your child shake it until the butter starts to form. After that, you can drain the buttermilk and enjoy the butter. This can give a child a much better appreciation for how much harder food preparation was long ago.

Coat of Arms

A coat of arms was an emblem used by knights to identify each other across a field of battle. Individual nobles might have their own coat of arms or they might use their family's coat of arms. Give your child some paper and some markers and ask them to design their own coat of arms. Animals, plants and even body parts stand for different attributes, so ask them what they feel should represent them.

Carnival Masks

Medieval times were not all about fighting work. Carnival took place before the lean days of Lent, and people were encouraged to celebrate. Masks were a large part of Carnival, so let your child decorate his own. Acrylic paint, rhinestones, ribbons and feathers are all accessories that can be used on a blank mask.
