The rich colors and designs of the peacock complement a variety of craft projects.
The distinct beauty and deeper meaning of the peacock makes it an ideal theme for a variety of crafts. Native to India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, China and Sri Lanka, the males of the species sport long tail feathers in hues of blue and green with the telltale center tip eye design. Natural, artificially colored and bleached feathers, as well as images of peacocks, make artful additions to children's, jewelry, clay, textile and wooden crafts.
For Kids
Using the majestic image of peacocks and their colorful appearance, children can create simple crafts employing materials such as paper, paint, markers, glue and construction paper. Children can create the body of the peacock using printed templates or shapes cut from blue construction paper. Draw feathers with blue, green and purple marker lines, adding the eye by applying a dot of light colored paint, such as gold or orange, with a pinkie. Draw eyes or a beak onto the body. Kids can also cut out eyes and a beak from a piece of paper and add with glue.
Jewelry
Peacock-themed jewelry, such as earrings and necklaces, can incorporate the feathers or images of the bird in their designs. Simple designs use the eyes of peacock feathers. Place crimp ends on the trimmed end of feathers to allow for the mounting of an earring hook or a metal O-ring for a necklace. More complex designs may use kiln-infused enamel imaging to set the colorful image of a peacock on the surface of a sterling silver locket.
Working with Polymer Clay
Polymer clay can be used to create peacock feather accents. The feather designs are made by layering three composite colors of 3-D clay to make green, blue and gold hues. Use a pasta machine to flatten the clay and then bend into the appropriate shape. Clay forms can be used to decorate salt and pepper shakers, pictures frames and personal accessories.
Home Decor
Whether used for the patterns on accent pillows or to decorate mirror frames, peacock-themed designs can be eye-catching additions to home décor. For a modern peacock-themed pillow, use gray spray paint to make a basic feather design on a fabric surface. Make the eye of the feather by sewing colorful felt pieces into the center of the feather design. Stick with a peacock's traditional blue and green colors or experiment with other bright colors such as pink. Mirror frames are created with blue, green, purple and gold beads and paint applied over a matte black frame.
