Simple Wedding Party Ideas

Simplicity can be elegant in a wedding reception.

A simple ceremony and reception for either a large or intimate gathering can still retain the elegance of a more ornate affair or can be informal and relaxed. Stripping away the excess in a reception and offering a simple menu, minimal decor and uncomplicated favors allows both the couple and guests to pay attention to the sentiment and significance of the event.

Decor

Keep decor simple through single-flower centerpieces, solid-colored tablecloths and minimal use of table scatters or other accent pieces. Create centerpieces from a bud vase holding a single calla lily or rose, or small bursts of flowers like billy balls, hydrangea or non-floral elements like a single candle, a decorated branch or elements to fit your motif. An alternative to many small tables with centerpieces is one long trestle-type table with two or three small centerpieces or one large central piece. Avoid place cards, chair covers, large swaths of fabric to create a lowered ceiling and overdecorating the gift table.

Menu

A reception meal featuring two or three simple course options, a brunch or tapas can streamline and simplify the serving process, giving the couple more time with guests. Offering a cocktails-only reception can also simplify the event and often saves money as well. Serving cupcakes instead of a tiered wedding cake can dial down the emphasis on the dessert, as can a cake with only two small tiers instead of three or more large ones. For couples hoping to minimize the amount of liquor or spirits available at their receptions, consider offering two or three "signature" cocktails and wine or champagne instead of a fully stocked bar.

Music

Simplify your reception music by hiring a DJ or a single musician instead of a full band, or having a friend or family member control the music through a laptop or mp3 player. Instrumental music during the meal and some vocals during dancing can create a less jarring atmosphere than constant songs, particularly those with pounding rhythms.
