Homemade Costume For Any Carnival Party

Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday is the Tuesday before Lent begins. It is a time for celebration and feasts. Whether you are going to celebrate Mardi Gras in New Orleans or in your home town, it is fun to dress up. The traditional colors of Mardi Gras are purple, gold and green so be sure to incorporate these colors into your costume.

Masks

Most people associate masks with Mardi Gras. Historically, they were used to hide a person's identity and social class. It is easy to make your own mask using paper mache. Choose bright colored paper or fabric and attach colorful feathers to your mask. Another idea is to make a black mask and spray with glitter or attach sequins around the edge of the mask. Complete your mask by attaching it to a dowel stick.

Clothing

Start by looking in your closet for clothing to wear because almost anything is appropriate to wear for Mardi Gras. You can choose to dress conservative by pairing black pants with a bright purple, green or gold shirt or dress more provocative and wear a colorful bikini top with shorts or a skirt. A traditional costume for Mardi Gras is to dress as a Jester. You can purchase a Jester hat at a costume shop and wear colorful mismatched clothing for an easy homemade costume.

Accessories

Your costume will not be complete without colorful Mardi Gras beads. Wear as many strands of beads as you want. You can purchase them from stores such as Party City or your local craft store. Throw on a feathered boa or colorful wig to complete your Mardi Gras costume.
