Children's Halloween Costumes
Give your child an unusual costume by making it yourself. You won't even need a sewing machine for many homemade children's Halloween costumes. You might even already have some of the items in your house. Create the costume to match the rest of the family or to show off his personality or ideas.
Fun Costumes
One of the advantages of making a homemade costume is that no one else will have your child's outfit. Dress your kid up as Macaroni and Cheese for a costume that both adults and kids will love. The base of the costume is an orange hat, sweatshirt and leggings. Cut small Styrofoam wreaths into fourths. These curves will serve as the noodles. Spray paint the Styrofoam in a well-ventilated space using proper safety protection. Use a combination of orange and yellow paint for a two tone effect. Attach the wreath pieces to the sweatshirt and hat with hot glue.
Use a black sweatshirt and pants as the base for a skunk costume. Fabric sewn in a long petal shape forms the tail when sewn to the back of the sweater. Glue two black feather boas to it with a white boa in the middle to serve as the stripe. Extra boas can adorn the openings of the pants and sleeves.
Pay homage to your child's personality and future aspirations by making a rock star costume. Sew a vest out of a funky cheetah fabric with feather boa trim. Your child can wear a white t-shirt under the vest. Use a larger bright pink boa around the ankles of a plain pair of khaki pants. Create oversize stars from sequined fabric and black felt backing and glue to the pants. A microphone and oversize sunglasses complete the outfit.
Hair Based Costumes
Make your child's hairstyle more elaborate to be the focal point of the costume. Hair is an inexpensive and creative base for a costume. Your child will be able to wear basic clothes she already has in her wardrobe. Start with a yellow t-shirt and turn your child into a beehive. Separate your child's hair into five ponytails. Weave yarn into each braid and secure all of the braids on top of the head to form a beehive shape. You can also make bees from pipe cleaners and attach the accents to the hair with bobby pins. Include twigs and faux flowers.
Turn a spiky hair style into grass. Use hair spray to make the hair stand straight up and accent with green dye spray. Place rubber bugs or snakes in the hair to complete the look. Wet hairspray will hold the embellishments in place.
For an elegant and unexpected Halloween costume base the idea around ice. Put plastic crystals in the hair and attach more crystals to the face. According to Martha Stewart, eyelash glue works for the facial crystals. Give your child oversize crystal jewelry to wear with an all white or ice blue outfit.
