Act out a murder mystery at your next party.
Attending dinner parties can become monotonous after a while. In order to plan a memorable party, incorporate a murder-mystery dinner party into your next event. This genre of party requires that guests interact, role-playing as certain characters, trying to solve the murder. Laughter and entertainment occur as side plots happen during the night.
Instructions
1. Make your guest list, as the size of your party will determine what kind of murder-mystery game you play. Will it be a smaller game suited for six players or a more extensive game for larger dinner party, where you divide the guests into teams to solve the crime.
2. Decide on which mystery game you want to play at the party. You can download murder mystery games for roughly $30-$40 if you'd like some assistance in writing a script and assigning characters. The website Dinner and a Murder carries several downloadable murder mysteries, including a roaring 1920's gangster murder mystery, where politicians, gangsters and prostitutes attend the grand opening of a speakeasy. This game includes the murder of a famous gangster. Alternately, choose a mystery that gives clues over several courses of food, such as the "Murder at Farthingay Manor," where six guests are thrown together at a country manor and come to suspect the others of murder.
3. Send invitations and character clues to guests once you have your final count. Include information about the game you have selected and full character information about the character you are assigning to that guest. Write down a description of the character. Is he a politician or a gangster? Did he work at a brothel? These characters would apply if you decide to play the roaring 20's gangster murder mystery. Suggest some costume ideas, such women in evening wear with feather boas and men in zoot suits with black gangster hats.
4. Plan your menu for the night. If you plan to reveal clues over each course, offer appetizers, such as fried ravioli, crab stuffed mushrooms or a spicy cheese dip, served with tortilla chips. Then serve a main course such as grilled chicken and pasta. Bake a "death by chocolate" cake as the main dessert but offer other delicacies such as mousse or pudding. Feature cocktails, such as a champagne punch or a mint julep, which was popular in the 1920's.
5. Hide clues relating to the party idea, according to the instructions of the game. Explain more details of the game to guests as they arrive so they can act in character the entire night and add to the fun. Offer clues on the murder over each course of dinner and watch your guests entertain themselves as they stare at each other to figure out the prime suspect.
