Planning A Western Party

A western theme party starts with planning.

Western parties are laid back and rowdy at the same time. Decorating almost does itself with cowboy hats, bandanas, wagon wheels and horseshoes. Gather everyone around the campfire, or in this case a fire pit outside if the weather permits. Give your favorite grown-up cowgirl or boy a rootin' tootin' shindig of a party. The trick to a successful Western party is in the planning. Get started planning your party at least a month in advance.

Instructions

1. Look at a calendar and note potential dates that are at least three to four weeks in the future to give guests time to plan to attend your party. If there is a guest of honor let him select the date that's most appropriate. If not, select a date that is most convenient for you and doesn't conflict with any other events.

2. Make or buy the invitations. Use scrapbooking paper with a western motif. Or cut cowboy bandanas into squares. Glue them on the outside of a folded card. Write the invitation details on the inside of the card. Mail three weeks before the party.

3. Inventory what decorations you have on hand that would work for a Western Party. Items might include cowboy hats, boots, toy horses, ropes, wagon wheels, lanterns and horseshoes. Include things that would be found in a saloon or brothel such as feather boas, black lace, satin dresses and high heeled boots. Shop for additional decorations. Arrange for the florist to deliver centerpieces the day of the party. Wild flowers in cowboy boots or roses in overturned cowboy hats would fit in with the Western theme.

4. Reserve tables, chairs and tablecloths to rent if the party is large and you don't have the equipment on hand. Other items to rent include glassware and utensils.

5. Write down a list of potential menu items to discuss with the caterer or prepare yourself. Western fare includes grilled steaks, chili, biscuits, baked potatoes and beans. Go all out and add smoked barbecue pulled pork roast, sourdough bread, coleslaw and assorted fresh salads such as potato, three-bean, chopped tomato and pasta. Desserts include apple pie, peach cobbler and pineapple-upside-down cake. Beer, margueritas and fresh lemonade are good cowboy beverages.

6. Calculate how much food and drink will be required based on how many guests you believe will attend. Make a shopping list based on what you don't have on hand. Shop two days before the party.

7. Call a housecleaning service and make an appointment for the house to be cleaned two or three days before the party. Cleaning the day of the party is too hectic because you'll also be decorating and preparing food.
