Spend your over-the-hill birthday getting excited about the road ahead.
The very term "over the hill" conjures images of tombstones and bleak colors of gray and black. Bill Dodds jokes in his book "How to Survive Your 40th Birthday" that 40-year-olds must worry about blood pressure and not injuring themselves on the big day of the party. However, youthful vitality is found in people ages 40, 50, 60 and even 90. Whatever type of party you choose, an over-the-hill birthday is worthy of joyous celebration.
High-Roller Night
Your financial situation has likely improved since turning 20 or 30 because you're probably more established in your career. Celebrate your accomplishments by spending your birthday having a night out on the town. Living the life of the wealthy for an evening doesn't necessarily mean spending large amounts of money. Rent a luxury car for the night (or borrow one from someone you know as a birthday favor), enjoy a glass of wine at a luxurious resort, walk the grounds and enjoy the stars, try on designer clothing at the high-end mall or make a fancy chocolate and cheese platter at home.
Park Party
Just because you're technically over the hill, that does not mean the youth is sucked from your body. Throw a lively party in the park. Hire a DJ or compile a playlist of energetic songs and throw together some kebabs or high-end meats and cheeses for a fancy barbecue. Blend some margaritas and use those cliched tropical umbrellas. Fill a bucket with water balloons and throw some squirt guns in the mix. The possibilities are numerous, and none of them has to result in succumbing to the dreary image of lethargy and disability.
Boat Party
If you live near a large enough body of water, save your money in the preceding months to rent a nice boat for the night of your party. Though a costly option, a milestone birthday is worthy of the splurge. An alternative is to rent a boathouse, dock or space by the lake to achieve a similar aquatic feel.
Stock the ship with your favorite wine, make platters of your favorite appetizers and ask the captain to tour around your city's famous landmarks. If possible, rent a few musicians to play songs aboard the ship. To customize the evening further, decorate the boat with your favorite fresh flowers and colors. Have your closest friends and family make toasts and speeches about their favorite memories of you throughout the years and everything they hope for you to achieve in the coming years.
Makeover Day
Spend the day with your closest friends getting a head-to-toe makeover. Discover a stylish new haircut and coloring, update your wardrobe to include elegant and colorful pieces and buy accessories. Additionally, pamper yourself at the spa and indulge in a facial or manicure. Even men can benefit from a massage and pedicure.
Over-the-Hill Themed Party
For those looking to embrace the "over-the-hill" stereotype, make gift baggies full of band-aids, tombstone candles, denture cream and other products for the elderly. Have each guest write down a humorous phrase that should be on your tombstone. In addition to serving a tombstone cake and decorating the house with black streamers, serve black foods, such as caviar, black olives, licorice and black jelly beans.
