Mascot costumes can be animals, people or even shapes.
Making a mascot can seem like a challenging process, but with the right tools you can have your very own mascot costume. Whether it be for a school function, Halloween costume or if you're a fan who wants to show your appreciation at sporting events, learning the tools and steps you'll need to making a mascot costume can help make the process go a little smoother.
First Draft
A drafted design on paper of your mascot is one important thing you'll need when making a costume. Drawing out your design and what you want the final outcome of your mascot costume to look like can be done with some blank paper and colored pencils. This draft can then be used to help you decide what materials you'll need and how you'll create the different areas of your mascot.
Fabric
Fabric is another thing commonly used when making mascots. Decide what fabric to choose based on your design, with considerations to wear-and-tear. If the mascot costume is going to be used a lot, use heavy duty fabrics and skip on sheer ones. If you are in warmer weather, use fabrics that will allow airflow, whereas colder weather might be best for heavier fabrics.
Sewing Supplies
A sewing machine or a good seamstress are usually required when making a mascot costume. Depending on your design, sewing can be as simple as sewing together a shirt or dress, or as intricate as sewing together large pieces to make up a whole. If your mascot costume requires fabric and sewing as most do, then having a sewing machine or experienced seamstress on hand will make the process a lot easier.
Hot Glue
Hot super glue is a powerful adhesive and can be used for a variety of crafts, including mascot making. Hot super glue can be used to glue on any small adornments for your mascot costume. For example, if your mascot has feathers you can opt to super glue them on. Other examples include eyes, buttons, hair, hats and other accessories.
Thick Wire
Thick, bendable craft wire may also be required when making a mascot costume. Many mascot costumes have large shapes, like a large circular shape for a mascot head. To obtain this shape you can bend thick craft wire into a frame for the large shape and then drape fabric or even papier mache around the frame to make the final product.
