Steps To Make A Bird Finger Puppet

Use the nocturnal owl as inspiration for your finger puppet.

Entertain your child for hours with a finger puppet that looks like a bird, complete with its fluffy plumage. Construct a flock of bird puppets for your child to use during her first theatrical performance. Design each bird using nature for inspiration, such as a blue jay, red cardinal or the more tropical toucan. Or create bird puppets after going on a bird-watching expedition, using the birds you find as the models for your design.

Instructions

1. Cut a 6-by-3-inch oval from a sheet of yellow felt. Cut the felt oval in half across the middle so you have two 3-by-3-inch half-ovals. Stack the two pieces so the curved edges are even. Apply hot glue around the edges of the oval except for the straight edge along the base; this is where the finger will go into the puppet.

2. Place the felt shape on your finger. Wrap two pipe cleaners --a white and a yellow one -- around the felt shape at the same time. Start at the bottom of the puppet as you wrap the pipe cleaners flat against the felt so every other color is white as you go. Use hot glue to attach the ends of the pipe cleaners to the felt base.

3. Attach two to four craft feathers to the back of the finger puppet in the center of the pipe cleaners. Use hot glue and position the feathers so they stand up and out from the puppet for the tail feathers of the bird.

4. Affix two small googly eyes to the top front of the puppet on the yellow felt, just below the curved top using hot glue.

5. Cut a 1/2-inch diamond shape from the yellow felt. Use hot glue to attach the diamond to the front of the finger puppet, below the eyes, to form the beak of the bird.
