Using A Stomach Hook For Fielddressing Game Wild birds

Process birds immediately after the hunt.

The gut hook is a small hook built into a field dressing knife blade. The hook is not a necessity for field dressing game birds but it is useful and limits your contact with the guts. The hook is easy to use on large game birds like grouse and waterfowl. The hook remains useful on small game birds like dove and quail but many hunters find it easier to use their hands for the gut removal.

Instructions

1. Pluck the feathers from the lower abdominal and anus region on the bird. Pluck until you are looking at a smooth piece of skin between the anus and abdomen.

2. Make a shallow incision with the blade end of the knife on the exposed section of skin. This creates an access point to the body cavity and guts.

3. Slide the point of the knife into the cavity. Run the blade along the side or top wall of the abdomen to avoid puncturing the guts. Stop when the knife point reaches the throat of the bird.

4. Rotate the knife handle three times to grab the intestines with the hook. Pull the knife down and out of the body cavity to remove the guts from the bird. The hook will grab the guts and pull them out of the cavity.

5. Pluck the remainder of the bird and wash the cavity for cooking or storage.
