Foam Ball Fabric Crafts

Styrofoam is made from polystyrene foam. The name "Styrofoam" is a brand name that specializes in foam shapes used for many things. It's often used as packing material, but is a great crafting choice as well. Styrofoam is relatively strong, holds its shape well and doesn't weigh much. It can be cut, stained or painted. Another popular crafting method is to cover the Styrofoam with fabric. By covering the foam with fabric you'll protect the foam from being damaged and give it a pretty finish.

Kissing Ball

A kissing ball is the perfect decoration for Valentine's Day or Christmas. Traditionally, kissing balls were a Victorian tradition. A kissing ball was a round ornament hung from a door frame of a room. It might also have included mistletoe, the kissing herb. Use a three- to six-inch Styrofoam ball as the base. Pleat fabric onto your foam ball, pinning the pleats at the top of the ball and the bottom. Use decorative stickpins to secure the fabric onto the ball. After you have covered the entire ball, use a hot glue gun to tack on some pink or red silk roses to the top of the kissing ball. Also, glue on a loop of ribbon about a foot in length. This will be your hanger. At the base of the kissing ball, glue on some imitation mistletoe or a maybe a festive tassel. Use whatever colors you like. For Valentine's Day, your kissing ball could be red, pink and gold. A Christmas theme ball might use blue fabric and be decorated with silver ribbons.

Hanging Ghosts

Make some hanging foam ball ghosts for Halloween. This simple craft would be the perfect activity to share with little ones. Start with a variety of sizes of Styrofoam balls. Cut white fabric circles with pinking shears for a country look. Lay a fabric circle flat. Place the foam ball in the center then secure the fabric with some white or black silk ribbon. You could give your ghosts funny faces with a black permanent marker. Run some fishing line through two upper sides of the foam balls. Or you can double up some fishing line and glue it to the top of your ghost's head. This will create an invisible hanger. Your ghost will appear to float in the air. Hang your ghosts on a front porch in the trees of your yard.

Christmas Ornaments

Fabric-covered foam balls make lovely Christmas ornaments. Cut circles out of fabric with some specialty scissors to give your edges a neat look. Make the circles big enough to cover the ball and have about four inches left over. Put your Styrofoam ball in the center of the fabric. Gather the fabric together and secure it around the ball with a festive ribbon. Use a hot glue gun to attach about four inches of ribbon to the fabric's opening. This will make your hanger for the Christmas tree. You could use fabric that features angels, Santa or Frosty. Pretty gold or silver ribbon would be the perfect embellishment. Attach a silk poinsettia or plastic snowflake to the ribbon where the fabric is gathered.
