Circus Sideshow Ideas

Carnival Sideshow Ideas

Back when traveling circuses traversed every corner of America, the sideshow was a top attraction. Featuring a titillating collection of freaks and oddities, it was a place to be shocked, intrigued and amazed. With a little creativity, it is possible to re-create a sideshow that would make a veteran carny proud.

She's a Looker

Bearded ladies were once a sideshow staple, their fuzzy faces drawing gawkers from miles away. Although most women can't grow whiskers of their own, it is possible to fool an audience with a high-quality fake beard. Many theater supply companies and costume shops carry a selection of faux facial hair and can make even the most beautiful woman bear a resemblance to Grizzly Adams.

Inked

Once up a time, tattoos were a rare site. Body art was limited to society's outcasts and criminals. Although inked skin is more popular today, someone with more than a couple of tatts is still something to see. A heavily decorated friend can make an excellent tattooed man (or woman). Add more designs with temporary tattoos, many of which are quite elaborate. A pair of cloth tattoo "sleeves" can do the trick as well, making it look as if the wearer is inked from shoulder to wrist.

Ooh-la-la!

Back in the day, men would often slip into a special tent at the sideshow to see a pretty lady strut her stuff. A saucy (but tasteful) girlie show can still be a fun act to watch. No nudity is required; just choreograph a flirty act inspired by Gypsy Rose Lee or modern burlesque queen Dita Von Tease. Props such as oversized fans and feathers add to the performance, so get creative.

Magic

Pull a rabbit out of a hat, make a few playing cards disappear and wave a wand for a thrilling magic act. Cutting an assistant in two might be a bit complicated, but anyone can learn a few basic tricks with the help of a kit or book. Crowds will be amazed.
