Nunchucks are essential to any would-be ninja looking to gear up for a battle or just to impress your ninja friends. Even if you don't know how to use the "boatman's staff," just swinging the weapon around in random circles will still look pretty cool. Follow these steps to get your stealthy hands on an ancient weapon.

1. Make sure personal possession of nunchucks is legal where you live. A number of countries in Europe and a few American states have outlawed the personal possession nunchucks. Even though you might be able to buy the weapon online, it does not mean you can legally keep them. So, do a little legal research before you spend the money.
2. Consider your reasons for buying nunchucks. If you're looking for an ornamental weapon to hang on a wall there's no sense in spending a lot of money on full contact nunchucks. On the other hand, if you're looking to take out some bad guys or to practice martial arts with the nunchucks, you should invest in a pair that is up to martial arts standards.
3. Think about different materials. You can buy nunchucks made from plastic, wood, graphite and even rattan. If you're training with the nunchucks, think about going for a padded pair, at least until you're adept enough to not hurt your sparring partner.
4. Contact the North American Nunchaku Association. The NANA can give you some good advice about buying nunchucks, if you're really serious about the weapon. Check out the Association's website for recommendations, guides, accessories and other accoutrements that will come in handy.
