4th Of This summer Craft Projects For Children

Use kids' handprints as the basis of a July 4th craft project.

The Fourth of July is a major summer holiday filled with fireworks, barbecues and other enjoyable activities. Get kids into the spirit of the celebration by engaging them in holiday craft-making activities, then use the crafts that they create to decorate your home and give it a patriotic look for the holiday.

Handprint Eagle T-Shirt

Kids can use their handprints to create a patriotic T-shirt to wear on the Fourth of July. You'll need a plain white T-shirt for each child. Have kids cover their hands in brown fabric paint and press them onto the center of their shirts, with their palms facing down and their fingers pointing out to the sides. This creates the body of the eagle. Have them cover the index, middle and ring finger of one hand with white paint and press it on the shirt underneath the body, pointing downward, to create tail feathers. To make a head for the eagle, have them form a fist with one of their hands and cover the pinkie side with white paint, then center an imprint above the handprints. A finger dipped in black fabric paint and pressed onto the head makes an eye. Have them cover the tip of a pinkie with yellow paint and press it next to the head to create a beak.

Craft Stick Flag

Have kids use craft sticks to create an American flag. Instruct them to paint five sticks red and four sticks white. When the paint dries, glue the edges of the sticks horizontally in an alternating red and white pattern to another craft stick that is positioned vertically. The vertical stick should be on the right side. Break another stick in half and glue one of the halves to the back center of the flag and one to the back left side. Cut a small square of blue construction paper and have kids cover it with silver star stickers or use silver glitter glue to create stars. Attach the blue paper to the upper right corner of the flag. Glue another stick to the bottom of the vertical stick. Kids can make several of these flags and stake them into the ground along a walkway or driveway for a festive outdoor decoration on Independence Day.

Patriotic Garland

You can drape this patriotic garland through trees, around window curtain rods or anywhere else you see fit. Give kids star-shaped cookie cutters, have them trace them onto pieces of red, white and blue card stock and cut them out. Once they've made the stars, provide them with a hole puncher and instruct them to punch two holes side-by-side in the middle of each star. Cut a length of blue or red raffia and string it through the holes in the stars. After the stars are on the raffia, tie a knot on either end of it to prevent the stars from falling off.
