Homemade Egg & Sausage Halloween Outfits

A party of three can go dressed as eggs, bacon and toast.

Clever couple costumes often get a laugh at Halloween parties and can be a fun way to build a closer bond with your significant other. Dressing up your children in outfits that go together can also make an incredibly cute effect -- and possibly pay dividends when you loot their trick-or-treat bags later. Bacon and eggs costumes are fairly easy to make at home, and the rounded egg yolk at belly level makes it an unusually fitting option for a maternity costume.

Egg White

There are several possible approaches to constructing the egg white. You can create a rigid egg white by tracing an amorphous shape onto foam core and cutting it out with scissors or a sharp craft knife. Quilt batting or white felt makes a softer egg white costume which is more comfortable to wear, but may also be floppier and harder to manage. A wire sewn into a hem around the edge will stabilize soft egg white costumes.

Egg Yolk

Similarly, there are several approaches possible to create the egg yolk. For a rigid egg costume, find a large basket or mixing bowl that is sized in the right proportion to your egg white. Spray paint it yellow and attach it to the yolk with strong glue or tape. You can make a softer egg yolk costume by sewing a yellow round of felt onto the white and stuffing it with batting or, for a simpler approach, simply pinning or sewing a round yellow cushion or two to the egg white.

Bacon

The bacon, like the eggs, can be rigid or flexible. For a one-person costume, create smaller bacon slices and attach them to the egg white. If you're making a couple costume, make two larger slices of bacon. A simple approach is to cut dark red or brown foam core into wobbly-edged strips and connect them at the ends, then spray paint tan stripes for the fatty parts. For a softer bacon costume, use reddish-brown and tan felt and sew in some elastic to add the curvy edges.

Attachments and Accessories

There are several options for how to wear your costume, depending on how you constructed the pieces. You can connect rigid constructions, such as a foam core egg white, to a pair of suspenders using staples or tape across the back of the suspenders. Softer costumes, such as cloth or felt bacon strips, can be sewn directly onto a plain white shirt. For a humorous single-person costume, dress up as an egg and wear a flexible strip of bacon like a feather boa. For added punch, carry around matching mugs of coffee or a large prop devil's fork spray-painted silver.
