The Open Cretan is a variation of the Cretan stitch, a long-armed stitch, which is used as a line stitch or a border stitch. It's also used to couch varying weights of thread to the foundation fabric, and can be arranged in rows to make a lattice pattern. The lattice can then be embellished with beads or French knots.
Instructions
1. Use tracing paper and transfer the design for the needlework onto the fabric. Draw two parallel lines along which the stitch is to be worked.
2. Insert the fabric into an embroidery hoop. Align the fabric so that the grain is smooth and straight.
3. Work the Cretan stitch by bringing the needle up at the start of the line to be worked. Move ahead slightly on the line and make a small stitch by going through the foundation fabric.
4. Keep the needle pointed toward the center of the work. Keep the thread under the needle. Bring the needle through the fabric after making the small stitch.
5. Move down to the lower line and repeat the step. Catch the thread under the needle each time a stitch is made.
6. Work the open Cretan the same way as the Cretan stitch but insert the needle vertically into the fabric rather than at a slant. Space the stitches in an open manner. Create a zigzag line that can gradually curve.
