Steps To Make A Toucan Mask

Toucans make for great, colorful masks.

When you are putting together a toucan costume for Halloween, a costume party or for a class play, you can make the costume look more realistic by including a toucan mask complete with a large, extending toucan beak. Although you may have difficulty locating a toucan mask at a costume shop, you can make your own using basic craft materials.

Instructions

1. Combine 1 cup of flour, 1/2 cup of salt and 1 cup of water into a bowl. Stir the mixture with a spoon for two minutes to combine the ingredients completely.

2. Bunch up newspaper into a wad, and tape the wadded newspaper onto the nose section of a blank craft mask using masking tape. Form the wadded newspaper to resemble a toucan's beak.

3. Cut more newspaper into strips using scissors to measure 2 inches wide, 6 inches long. Dip each strip into the flour mixture, and lay the strips one at a time over the mask and newspaper beak. Apply six layers of papier mache strips. Do not cover the eye holes. Allow the toucan mask to dry for 12 hours.

4. Paint the beak portion of the mask using yellow, red and green acrylic paint. Paint the facial portion of the mask black, then allow the paint to dry for 30 minutes.

5. Apply a layer of clear acrylic glaze over the entire mask, then allow the glaze to dry for 30 minutes.

6. Cover the facial portion of the toucan mask with tacky glue, then press black craft feathers onto the glue-covered mask. Do not cover the eye holes. Allow the glue to dry for 30 minutes before wearing the toucan mask.
