Higher Level Dusting Tools

A telescopic handle makes it much easier to dust those high shelves.

High level dusting is an important part of your household cleaning routine. Experts advise cleaning rooms from the top down, which means removing dust from the tops of pictures, curtain poles, ceiling corners and light fittings before dusting tabletops, sideboards, entertainment units, sofas and chairs. If you ignore high surfaces and simply clean areas you can reach, dust will drop down and the effect of your low-level cleaning will not last for long.

Telescopic Handles

Whatever type of dusting equipment you use to reach high areas of your home, make cleaning as risk free as possible by attaching the equipment to a telescopic handle. These handles can be extended to a length that allows you to remain standing safely on the floor rather than climbing onto steps. Telescopic handles also mean there's no need to stretch to reach high dusty corners. Stretching can result in painful strains and pulled muscles.

Vacuum Dusting

Your vacuum cleaner is an ideal tool for high-level dusting. It comes equipped with the necessary cleaning heads and extension wands to suck dust and cobwebs out of the highest corners. Use the dusting brush attachment to remove grime and cobwebs from the area where the ceiling and wall join. This brush will also clean the tops of picture frames, light fittings and curtain poles. The upholstery nozzle is used to remove dust from the tops of curtains.

Extra Reach

If you buy a new vacuum cleaner, don't throw out the extension wands or cleaning heads for the old one. If the extension wands are the same size as those of your old cleaner, use them to provide extra reach to very high areas, such as the tops of vaulted ceilings or ceilings over stairwells. If they are not the same size, they can be joined together using a small adaptor.

Vacuum Dusting Tools

Vacuum tools for removing dust easily from large, flat overhead surfaces are now available. They have a larger cleaning head and a curved tube that joins the vacuum's extension wand. The curved tube can be set to various angles, which means the tool can be used to clean areas such as high shelving and the tops of wardrobes while the person doing the vacuuming stands safely on the ground.

Other Types of High-Level Dusting Equipment

Lambswool and microfiber dusting heads attract and hold onto large quantities of dust. These are effective in cleaning high areas when attached to telescopic handles. Feather dusters are also effective, especially for cleaning high shelves with items on them as they fit easily between the items. When purchasing feather dusters, ensure they are made from ostrich feathers as their natural oil is most effective at trapping dust in the feather barbs.
