How You Can Spend Or Fanstitch A Blanket

A shell or fan stitch blanket makes a great gift for a new baby.

The shell stitch, sometimes known as the fan stitch, is created by a combination of crochet stitches. The lacy design provides shells or fans that are staggered for emphasis. This pattern is highly suitable for an organic cotton baby blanket that will provide a cozy wrap for a newborn, perfect for the trip home from the hospital. Knowledge of the basics of how to crochet is required to make this blanket.

Instructions

1. Chain until the chain length measures 36 inches long, with the total chains a multiple of the number six. Chain two and single crochet in the second chain from the hook.

2. Create a shell or fan by skipping two chains, making five double crochets in the next chain, skipping two chains and single crocheting in the next chain. Continue with this pattern across the row.

3. Chain two, make two double crochets in the next single crochet, skip two stitches and make shell stitches across the row.

4. Chain one, single crochet in the next double crochet and make shells across the end of the row.

5. Repeat the last two rows until the blanket measures 36 inches square. End off and cut the yarn.
