A 50th birthday is the age for parties that could include a variety of humorous, embarrassing and memorable activities. Choosing a theme for the guest of honor could be centered around something they enjoying doing or it could be something that they would least expect. Poodle skirts, hula hoops, blackjack or feather boas are all inexpensive and exciting ways to invoke an unforgettable birthday party.
1950s Rock N Roll Party
Have a 50th birthday party in a '50s-themed diner.
For someone turning 50, having a 1950s party is a rockin' and rollin', easy-to-plan and inexpensive theme for a birthday party. This era became popular for the clothing worn, the music played and the innocent fun among teenagers hanging out in the malt shop. If it is in the budget, renting a local diner would be a fun option for the venue; however, if it is not in the budget or you do not have a diner in the area, there are decorations you could use for the same effect. Send invitations that are look like a record or jukebox and request the guests to dress in a '50s outfit. Decorations should be in black and white with splashes of red. Food from the 1950s was super basic such as hamburgers, onion rings and Cherry Cokes. Play music from the 1950s on a record player, hire a DJ to play the music or rent a jukebox. Have a dance contest and a hula hoop contest.
Mardi Gras Theme
Mardi Gras themes make for an exciting and colorful birthday party.
A Mardi Gras birthday party would be a party complete with inexpensive colorful decorations, spicy foods, jazz music and disguised guests. Invitations in the shape of a mask can be easily made with card stock in various colors; attach a piece of elastic string, decorate with feathers and write the party information on the back of the mask with a request for the guest to wear their mask and costume. The decorations should include Mardi Gras colors, which are green, gold and purple. Incorporate the colors with streamers, inexpensive boas, beads, table covers, napkins and bowls. Find pictures of New Orleans street signs online, print them out and hang in various areas. The food should be large pots of Cajun-style eats, such as jambalaya, gumbo and/or spicy red beans and rice with colorful drinks served in tall hurricane glasses. For the birthday cake, serve King Cake -- which is the traditional Mardi Gras cake -- and don't forget to have a plastic baby hidden in the cake. Games could include a bead-toss contest, a best costume competition or a crawfish eating contest.
Las Vegas Casino Theme
Celebrate turning 50 under the bright lights of a casino-themed party.
Turn your venue or home into a casino for an inexpensive casino-themed birthday party. Make inexpensive invitations by printing out pictures of a casino or dice; fold and write the party information on the inside. Decorations should include a lot of lights, which are easily obtained by stringing Christmas lights throughout the room; decorate boxes to look like dice by painting them white with black dots. Playing cards can be spread throughout the room or you can print out pictures of playing cards to hang on the walls. The music should be Vegas headliners, such as Tom Jones, or others famous for playing in Las Vegas. Have several card tables available or rent game tables and play a variety of card games such as blackjack, poker or Texas Hold-'Em. Decide ahead of time if the guests will playing with real or fake money. Serve food buffet-style that includes finger foods, salads and if your budget allows, pre-cooked steaks.
