Building A Red-colored Bird House

Birdhouses provide
shelter from predators.

Birdhouses provide a convenient shelter during the months of spring and summer for a variety of species of birds and gives them a safe place to live and lay eggs for an extended period of time. Building a birdhouse properly does require some proficiency with drills and tools, although no aspects of the building process are particularly dangerous. Birdhouses should always be mounted on a pole or long wooden piece so that predators will not be able to access them. Bird houses can also be nailed to tree trunks.

Instructions

1. Fit together the four sides of the birdhouse, and nail them in place at the joints. There should be four angled pieces. The top two pieces are the roof and should be made of the 7-by-5-inch plywood. The two bottom sides are made using 1/2-inch plywood and should be butted together so that they are properly attached and glued in place.

2. Attach the back of the birdhouse, which is one of the 5 7/8-inch squares. Nail the back in place and smooth glue over the joints to secure it.

3. Glue two of the 1/2-inch plywood pieces inside the birdhouse underneath the two sides of the roof. These will be the supports.

4. Cut a hole in the front piece of the birdhouse with the 1 3/-inch hole saw. Below it, drill a hole for the dowel perch using the 1/4-inch drill bit. Sand all rough edges and inner parts of the birdhouse.

5. Hammer the front part to the rest of the birdhouse, then add glue around the joints to reinforce it.

6. Glue the 5-inch dowel between both roof sections. Sand any sides or inner parts that are still rough, then glue the 3-inch dowel into the hole made on the front of the birdhouse.

7. Paint the birdhouse with the red wood stain. Make sure you are using a water-based stain, nonwater based paints can be toxic. Allow the paint to dry.
