How You Can Keep Electronic Components Awesome

Avoid damage to televisions and other electronic pieces by storing and caring for them properly.

Electronic components, such as those found in desk top or laptop computers, televisions or stereos, are covered with plastic or metal casings in order to protect them from dust, debris and other potential damage. Unfortunately, many electronic owners neglect to protect their gadgets from the damage that can be caused by heat. Electronics that are exposed to excessive heat or allowed to become overheated will suffer damage, some of which could be beyond repair. There are several ways to protect gadgets and their components from the dangers associated with heat.

Instructions

1. Clean any fans found on the electronic piece with a can of compressed air. This will remove any dust or debris that is clogging the fan, which could be slowing it down or causing it to stop all together.

2. Clean away any dirt or debris found on an electronic device's vents with a small hand vac or a feather duster. These vents are designed to allow heat to escape the gadget, and allow cool air in. Any blocks in the vents can cause the electronic device to overheat.

3. Avoid stacking any electronic devices directly on top of one another. This means do not place a DVD player on top of your stereo or subwoofer. The heat emitted by each component will cause damage to the other.

4. Avoid storing or placing your gadgets and devices next to any heat sources, such as a radiator. The pieces should also be kept away from direct sunlight. If possible, keep these items in the pathway or an air conditioner or a fan or keep them in the coolest areas of the home, such as the basement.

5. Place electronics so that there is at least 2 to 3 inches between the back of the gadget and the wall. This will allow any fans or vents that are found on the back of the unit ample space to remove warm air.

6. Unplug the electronic unit if it feels extremely hot to the touch or begins to malfunction because of excessive heat. Allow the piece to cool down completely before attempting to plug it in or power it up.
