Funny Mythological Creature Costume Ideas

Use masks, makeup and hair dye to heighten your costume.

If you're tired of normal costumes, try for a hilarious alternative this year. Play on well-established mythological creatures and add a comic twist to create a unique costume. One way to add instant comedy to your costume is to cross dress. Think about mythological creatures that are typically represented as the opposite sex and create your drag version of them.

Male Unicorn

Guys can add a funny twist to a mythological creature by dressing as a unicorn. For the funniest outfit, find a white top and pants that are skintight or made of spandex. Attach a pink feather boa on a hair band to act as your mane, and glue a horn on the front of the hair band. Men can ham it up with fake eyelashes, a feather boa tail and pink wristbands on their wrists and ankles.

Female Centaur

Women who want to get a laugh can put together a centaur costume. The costume works best with brown leggings and fake hooves. You can purchase fake horse legs, which attach to the back of your waist to create the effect of a second set of legs following behind you. For maximum comedic effect, find a prosthetic skin vest or a skin colored tunic and attach fake chest hair.

Edward the Vampire

If you'd like to poke fun at the "Twilight" craze, dress up an ultra-feminine version of Robert Pattinson's Edward the vampire. The costume works for either gender, but is even more comical for women to wear. Find an Elvis style wig to mock Edward's large hairdo. Apply a light foundation to the face and body and cover with glitter. Apply a generous amount of blush to your cheeks and don't forget lipstick or colored lip gloss. Find a grey pea coat and jeans to complete the look. You'll be recognizable as Edward, but the hairdo and makeup will add a hilarious comic effect.

Cyclops

Cyclops costumes come in a variety of styles and the single eye always elicits a laugh. Try to find a mask that provides discreet holes for your eyes with a giant fake eye at your forehead. You can purchase a full mask, but half masks work just as well and will allow you to breathe more comfortably. Be sure to dress in your most ragged clothing and carry a club with you. For a modern spin on the Cyclops costume, women can press as Leela, the Cyclops from the TV show "Futurama." Simply find a short, purple wig and attach fake eyelashes to a face mask with an eye at the center.
