Create a male costume from the Renaissance by combining ready-made clothing items. Halloween, theme parties and Renaissance fairs are all reasons for men to don period garb. Authentic costumes can run in the thousands of dollars and include hand-made chain mail and hand-tooled leather vests. But it's not necessary to spend that kind of money to look as if you stepped out of the 16th century. Instructions
1. Choose a large man's shirt, preferably light colored and full sleeved. Belt it loosely with a wide, leather belt. Use a genuine leather belt for a more authentic look.
2. Pair the large shirt with a pair of dark colored sweat pants with elastic at the waist and ankles. This style sweat pant gives the appearance of gathered breaches.
3. Pull on a pair of tall, dark leather boots. Genuine leather boots look most authentic.
4. Purchase a dark colored wide brimmed hat. If you can't find a hat with a wide enough brim, purchase a large piece of felt. Cut the felt into a wide circle, and cut a circle out of the center. Shape a length of wire into a circle and glue the wire around the outside edge. Fold the edge over the wire and glue. Fit the center hole over the head of a smaller hat and shape the wired edge. Add a large ostrich feather to the side of the hat.
5. Finish the costume with a either a toy or a reproduction sword worn through the belt at the side waste.
