Steps To Make Craft Creatures For First Grade

With help from an adult, first graders can make animal crafts.

First graders are at a stage of development in which they are able to be more independent when making crafts. Simple animal crafts are a project that first graders are able to create with little assistance from a parent or teacher. Animal-themed curriculum is common in first grade classrooms because most children are familiar with a wide variety of animals. Animal crafts can be tied into field trips, academic subjects or the children's own interests.

Instructions

Duck

1. Fold a large paper plate and a small paper plate in half. Use scissors to cut each plate in half.

2. Draw two duck feet that are about 3 inches long on orange construction paper. Give the child the paper and scissors and ask him to cut out the feet.

3. Draw two duck wings that are about 2 inches long on the other half of the yellow paper plate. Give the child the paper and scissors and ask him to cut out the wings.

4. Give each child a paintbrush and a container of yellow paint. Tell the child to paint one of the large paper plate halves and one of the small paper plate halves yellow.

5. Draw a 3-inch half circle on the middle of the straight edge of the smaller half paper plate so that the straight side of the small half circle lies on top of the straight side of the large circle. Give the child orange paint and ask him to paint the half circle orange. This orange area will become the duck's beak.

6. Roll the half of the large paper plate so that the straight edges meet and a cone is formed. Staple the straight edges together. Pinch the pointed top of the cone flat and staple it. The flattened area will serve as an attachment point for the head. The cone itself will form the body of the duck. Set the cone shaped body on the table so that the wide part of the cone is down. The cone should be able to stand by itself.

7. Roll the half of the small paper plate so that the straight edges meet and a cone is formed. The pointed portion of the cone should be orange. Staple the straight edges together. This will form the head and beak of the duck. Place the head on top of the body and staple the head to the attachment point on the body.

8. Apply glue to the two eyes, two feet, two wings and feathers. Ask the child to attach these to the duck.

Pig

9. Give each child a paintbrush and a container of pink paint. Tell the child to paint the paper plate pink.

10. Cut two cups from the egg carton. Cut one of the egg cups in half so that the two sides are identical.

11. Cut out two small eyes from black construction paper. Cut out two larger circles to serve as the nostrils.

12. Give the five pieces of the egg carton to the child. Ask the child to pain the outside and inside of the egg carton pieces.

13. Place two dots of glue in the middle of the paper. Ask the child to stick the nostrils on top of the glue dots.

14. Saturate the edges of the egg carton cup that has not been cut in half with glue. Give the egg carton piece with the glue on it to the child.

15. Ask the child to place the nostril on the face.

16. Apply glue to the edge top of the egg carton cups that have been cut in half. Ask the child to attach these ears to the pig's head.
