Those Activities Of Notting Hill Circus

The Notting Hill Carnival is the largest street festival in Europe. Annual attendance is typically high. In 2009 the carnival had an estimated attendance of one million people. The carnival has been held every year since 1966. The parade spans over 20 miles of road in West London. You can expect colorful costumes, Caribbean food and music. The carnival is a two day event that takes place during the August Bank Holiday, typically the last weekend of the month of August.

The Calypso Tent

The Calypso Tent is open every Friday for five weeks leading up to the Notting Hill Carnival, and open during the carnival as well. The Calypso Tent has entertained visitors for the past 18 years. It was previously held at the Yaa Centre, but has recently been moved to the Tabernacle. Tickets can be purchased from the venue one hour before doors open, and they take cash only. The Calypso Tent event allows some of London's greatest talents to showcase their Calypso music. Everything from the clothing and costumes to the accents and themes are inspired by Jamaica and the Calypso movement. Hear a variety of performers sing live.

Dance

You can enjoy music throughout the carnival. The steel band competition features many talented performers playing Caribbean steel drums live for your enjoyment. As you walk down the closed-off streets you will hear music played by the city's DJs and Calypso bands. Sound systems are set up throughout the carnival path, so that guests can dance along the carnival road.

The Parade and Costume Contest

The Notting Hill Carnival celebrates diversity. The event was originally organized to unite the area after race riots. Musicians dress in vibrant elaborate costumes and play Calypso music as they parade down the streets of Notting Hill. Costumes include headdresses, bright colors and feathers. The child's costume contest allows young audience members to get involved in the event. You can dress your little one in Calypso-inspired costumes and enter him into the contest. You can also enjoy great food as you take in the parade. You can expect cuisines from a variety of cultures. French, Spanish, Dutch, African and British foods are all featured, including Jamaican jerk chicken, fried plantains, exotic fruits and rum.
