Eggs are good for more than just omelettes.
Perhaps it's because they represent the beginning of life, or maybe it's their ovoid form, but for whatever reason, eggs lend themselves to art. You can make your own egg art projects at home that are easy enough to kids to help, or choose projects that require skill and a delicate touch. Once you're hooked at home, you might want to visit galleries where professional artists display their egg artwork.
Egg Art for Children
Have young children turn their Easter eggs into little critters. Glue small crafting pom-poms onto the eggs for snouts and limbs and glue wiggle eyes or draw eyes with a marker. Make a small stand for the egg out of a strip of construction paper so the critter sits upright. During the rest of the year, you can use this craft without dying the eggs first and still make light-colored animals like polar bears or chickens.
Older Kids and Adult Egg Art
Using a method to decorate eggs with wax is something to keep older kids interested in Easter and will intrigue adults as well. Dripping or drawing with wax on an egg and then dying it creates a sharp and professional-looking design. You can use crayons or drip candle wax onto the egg in your desired pattern and then dye the egg in whatever color you choose. Next, bake the egg at a low temperature so the wax can be peeled or wiped off to show the lovely design.
Eggshell Crafts
You don't even need the whole egg to do some attractive art projects; you can just use the shells that would otherwise be discarded. Make a mosaic on a candy jar or coffee grounds container by gluing pieces of eggshell in a design. Spread clear-drying craft glue over the shells or spray the whole jar with spray paint and then wipe off the shells; this makes an interesting light shading on the shells, while helping adhere them and give the whole piece color. Around Easter time, use already-dyed eggshells for brightly colored projects.
