Chicken Crafts For Primary Aged Children

Chicken Crafts for Primary Aged Children

There are many reasons chickens may be a part of a primary school lesson plan. You may be studying chickens, looking for an Easter craft or learning the differences between chickens and roosters. Whatever the reason, there are many easy chicken crafts that are simple to make and fun for children in kindergarten to fifth grade.

Chick Buckets

This is a great craft to do around Easter time. To create your own chick bucket, paint a small tin bucket with yellow acrylic paint. Once the paint is dry, glue yellow feathers on either side of it to make the wings. Glue more feathers on the top back of the bucket to make the chick's tail. Glue two googly eyes to the front of the bucket. For a beak, cut a small triangle out of orange craft foam and glue it to the bucket.

Use orange craft foam to make chicks feet, and glue them to the bottom of the bucket. Have each student create a chick. The teacher can create a larger brown to be the mother hen. Place the chick and mother hen together on a table to create a chicken family.

Plastic Egg Chickens

After Easter has passed, plastic Easter eggs are readily available at discount prices. The plastic eggs make great bodies for your chickens. Use scissors to cut out eyes, a beak, wings, tail and feet from construction paper or craft foam. Glue the body parts onto the egg to decorate it. Fill the egg bottoms with sand to provide weight to keep the egg upright. If you want to make the chicken into a rooster, cut out a red comb from construction paper to put on the top of the egg. If you have different sized eggs, you can make roosters, chickens and chicks.

Clucking Chick

This craft is fun for kids kindergarten age and up; and the completed chicken will cluck. Choose a clear plastic cup that is between 8 to 12 ounces in size. Paint the cup yellow and allow it to dry. Flip the cup upside down and use a utility knife to cut a slit in the bottom of it. Since utility knives are sharp, this should be done by an adult. Tie a string around a folded piece of red felt. Pass the loose end of the string through the slit you made in the cup and pull it down until the felt is flush with the outside of the cup. This makes the comb on the top of the chicken's head. Tie the loose end of the string around a sponge that has been cut in half widthwise. Glue feathers to the side of the cup to make feathers. Glue two googly eyes and a red felt beak to the cup. To make your finished chicken cluck, wet the sponge. Then fold it in half around the hanging string. Squeeze the sponge and pull it down the string.
