Owl And Moon Crafts

Help your child make glowing, moon-inspired crafts.

If you're teaching your child about the times of day and moon phases, or about nocturnal animals like owls, turn the lesson into a hands-on activity by making nighttime-themed crafts. The child can display his handmade moon and owl crafts in his bedroom or share them with friends. Use glow-in-the-dark art supplies if possible to design realistic-looking crafts.

Moon Phases Craft

Kids can learn about the phases of the moon by making enchanting crafts. Draw the seven moon shapes on pieces of white construction paper or card stock to represent each of the phases --crescent, half, gibbous and full. The two crescent, two gibbous and two half moon shapes are drawn facing in opposite directions. Cut the shapes out and cover them with glow-in-the-dark craft paint. You can also include a dark circle at the beginning to represent the new moon, which can't be seen.

Moon Surface Craft

Moon surface-inspired crafts will help kids understand what it would be like to walk on the glowing orb. Simply glue a variety of small, textured objects, such as dry beans, small pasta and rocks, to the front of a paper plate. Place a piece of foil over the plate and press it down and around the objects so that they resemble moon craters.

Owl Puppet

When teaching kids about nighttime creatures, don't forget the owl. Help kids make a playful owl-inspired puppet using a paper lunch bag. To begin the project, place a folded paper bag, bottom-side up, on the work surface. Cut two wing shapes out of brown construction paper and glue them to both sides of the bag. Create two clawed feet and a triangle-shaped beak out of orange construction paper and attach them to the bag. Use bright yellow craft paint to create two round eyes and black paint to make the pupils.

Paper Plate Owl

Turn paper plates into whimsical owl-themed crafts. Cover the fronts of two plain, white paper plates with brown craft paint and allow them to thoroughly dry. Cut one painted paper plate in half, add brown craft feathers to the halves, and glue the two halves to the back of the whole plate as wings. Create a beak out of a triangle-shaped piece of felt. Cut two round circles out of bright yellow paper and glue them above the beak. Glue two googly eyes on top of the yellow circles. To turn the owl into a hanging craft, create a yellow full moon from another paper plate, then punch a hole in the top of the owl and one in the top and bottom of the moon. Connect the owl to the bottom of the moon with a piece of yarn or string, and hang the moon from a hook by tying a piece of string or yarn through the top of the moon to the hook.
