Crafts With Chinese Fans

Chinese fan crafts include painted fans.

The Chinese have been using fans for more than 3,000 years. Originally made from feathers or silk, paper is now quite common for fans. Many simple and fun craft projects involve Chinese fans. These projects, suitable for all ages, are especially appropriate to include in preparation for a Chinese New Year celebration.

Folded Accordion Fan

One of the simplest fans to make is the accordion fan. Decorate a rectangular sheet of paper, held in the landscape orientation, with crayons and markers and then fold it accordion style. Staple or tie the bottom of the fan to maintain its form. To create a fan with the watery look of painting on silk, spray your paper with water, and gently blot with paper towels. Drip watercolors on your damp paper, allowing the color to spread and blend in various patterns. Let the paper dry completely before folding it into an accordion fan.

Folded Flower Fan

A variation of the folded accordion fan is the folded flower fan. Glue ice pop sticks or chopsticks to the right and left sides of your paper before folding. Fold your paper accordion style, and then bring the two sticks together to form the shape of a flower or circle. Secure the sticks with string, rubber bands or hot glue. An appropriate decoration for this fan would be a flower.

Round Fan

The round fan, originally inspired by the shape of the moon, involves tracing a circle and cutting out a round piece of heavyweight paper. Glue an ice pop stick or chopstick on to use as a handle. You can use decorative paper or experiment with other shapes.

Fan with Asian Brush Painting

One traditional way to decorate a round paper fan is with Asian brush painting. Use bamboo brushes and black ink to create simple, fluid paintings. It is very important to practice the design or image you would like to use for your brush painting several times on sketch paper so that you execute your final painting on the fan with skill and ease.
