Using Flowers In Draperies

Move past the standard window treatments and think of different ways to decorate your windows. Silk flowers can be a beautiful way to transform a basic window into something eye-catching and memorable. Whether you stretch silk flowers along the top as a valance, use them as tiebacks on the sides or even hang them from clear thread directly in front of the window, the effect will be beautiful.

Instructions

Use Silk Flower Garlands

1. Stretch a long silk flower garland across the top of the window. Attach the end of the garland to the drapery rod at one upper corner. Pull it across the entire width of the window to the other upper corner and attach it to the other end of the drapery rod. Simply loop the garland over the drapery rod or attach it with a dab of hot glue.

2. Cut the silk flower garlands off into lengths between 12 and 15 inches using the wire cutters. Use the short pieces of garland as tiebacks for the sides of the curtains. Tie the ends of the garland together with cotton string and then hang the garland tiebacks on hooks installed at the sides of the windows.

3. Add floral decorations to a window scarf by using silk flower garlands to attach the window scarf. Cut two 10-inch pieces of silk flower garland with the wire cutters. Make circles with the garland by tying the ends of each garland together with cotton string. Insert the window scarf through the circle of garland. Hang the garland circles on hooks at the upper right and left corners of the window where you would attach the window scarf.

Use Individual Silk Flowers

4. Gather individual silk flowers (on stems) in any color desired. Use only one color or a variety of colors to achieve the look you desire.

5. Cut a length of polyester thread and thread the needle with the thread. Tie a double knot approximately 6 inches from the end of the thread.

6. Insert the needle through the blossom of one flower and pull the needle through until the knot stops at the flower blossom. Tie another double knot on the other side of the blossom to anchor the blossom at this point on the thread.

7. Tie a double knot approximately 6 inches above the last knot on the thread.

8. Repeat steps three and four to continue adding more flowers to the thread. Stop when about 6 inches of thread remains and tie a double knot 6 inches from the end of the thread. Prepare another length of thread to continue threading flowers.

9. Join the threaded flowers together to make longer lengths, if desired. Make as many lengths as you need to hang threaded flowers down in front of your window.

10. Attach the thread to the top of the window. If you have sheers or curtains hanging, thread the needle through the 6-inch tail left on one end of the threaded flowers and insert the needle through the sheers at the top. Pull the needle through to the backside of the sheers and tie another knot to secure the threaded flowers. Repeat with each length of flowers. If you do not have sheers or curtains, simply tie the 6-inch tail around the drapery rod.
