How You Can Purchase Venetian Circus Masks

How to Purchase Venetian Carnival Masks

Venetian Carnival masks can be a fun memento of an Italian vacation or a whimsical decoration for your home. Numerous online retailers sell authentic Italian masks from Venice as well as the work of other artists creating their versions of the Venice Carnival mask. Consider many of the available styles before making your choice. Venetian Carnival masks date to the 1200s but became widely used in the 1700s to disguise the identities of festival-goers.

Instructions

1. Research mask shops and styles. Venetian masks come in three main types: fantasy, traditional and commedia dell'arte. Fantasy masks are the artist's own creation. Traditional masks include the black or white volto style, a simple face. Commedia dell'arte masks showcase figures from Italian theater and include the Harlequin mask.

2. Make a list of the masks you like best, writing down their names in Italian and English.

3. Create a list of Carnival mask shops in Venice, using the Europe for Visitors website or other Internet resources. Print out a map of Venice and mark the mask shop locations so you will be able to find them easily when you visit Venice.

4. Research Italian mask makers selling Carnival masks online if you are not traveling to Venice. Carta Alta Mask Shop is one of many mask retailers. Some shops specialize in traditional masks, while others create fantasy masks.

5. Check the prices at a variety of masks shops, especially if you're in Venice buying the masks. Prices can vary widely and some shops may try to take advantage of tourists.

6. Buy a variety of masks. If you're buying them in Venice, ask the vendor to package them for travel on the airplane. If you're buying them online, you will have to pay shipping costs but you won't need to worry about damage.
