Dramatic Dance Makeup Styles

Dramatic eyeshadow and fake lashes

Applying makeup for a performance is very different from applying everyday makeup. Being under bright spot lights washes out your features and makes it very difficult to see the details of your face. Therefore, it is important to apply dramatic stage makeup that will define your facial features. It is also vital that you match your makeup to the style of your costume, song, and overall theme of your dance. Every detail of your appearance contributes to the overall message you are trying to communicate.

Lashes

Your eyelashes are one of the key factors to making your eyes stand out. The bolder your eyelashes are, the more dramatic that you will look. To achieve a bold eye, it is important to apply the false eyelashes before you have applied any other makeup, because the lashes will stick better to clean skin. Also make sure the eyelid is dry and oil free. For an even more dramatic look, buy eyelashes with extra embellishments, such as jewels, feathers, or colored eyelashes.

Eye Shadow

Eye shadow is another important aspect of creating a dramatic look for your dance performance. Apply foundation to the eye area first, above the lash line. This will prevent the eye shadow from creasing during extended wear. Apply eye shadow over the entire eyelid, a little above the crease. Apply a lighter, complementary shade of a shimmery beige on the inner corner of the eye from the crease of the eyelid to the brow line. This will highlight the eye and make it appear bigger.

For a very dramatic look, apply a darker, bolder shade in the crease and outer corner of the eye, which will give the lid more depth. Experiment with bright colors such as golds and jewel tones that will call attention to your eyes.

Lips

Bold lips will complete your dramatic makeup look. Always gently exfoliate your lips before applying a dark lipstick. Brush a clean toothbrush over your lips lightly, or mix a small amount of moisturizer and sugar then rub it over the lips and rinse. Choose a lipstick that is much darker and bolder than your typical shade. The best way to do this is to go a few colors darker than the lipstick you typically wear in the same color family. Also, buy a lip liner in either a matching color to your lipstick or a neutral shade. Lip liner will keep your lipstick from bleeding onto your skin, which dark shades tend to do when you sweat.

Use a lip brush for the neatest application possible. If you find your lipstick fades quickly, brush a slight bit of powder makeup onto the lips before applying, then use a moisturizing lipstick to compensate for the dryness.
