Directions To Make A Toy Harry Potter Owl Prop

You can make a toy owl to go with a Harry Potter costume.

Make your own magic with an owl prop straight from the world of Harry Potter. With just a few basic materials, you can re-create Hedwig, Harry's pet owl from the popular book series. Wielding papier-mâch instead of a magic wand, you bring the fluffy owl to life. The technique is cost-conscious, using only newspaper dipped in a paste of glue and flour. With the addition of a few feathers, you will have a creative accessory with all the magic of Harry Potter.papier-mâch

Instructions

1. Blow up two balloons, making one about 6 inches long and the other about 3 inches long. Tape the small balloon on top of the larger, making the shape of a bird body with a head on top.

2. Tear strips of newspaper for the papier-mâch , making the strips about 1 foot long and 1 inch wide. Mix one cup of flour with one cup of white craft glue and one cup of water.

3. Dredge the paper strips in the mixture, and drape over the balloon structure, until the balloons are covered. Let the sculpture dry at least 24 hours.

4. Poke a pin through the body and head of the sculpture to pop the balloons inside.

5. Paint the owl white and let dry, then cover with white craft feathers by hot gluing each feather in place. Leave a circle free of feathers on the head to paint on a face. Paint two small black pupils and a thin yellow beak onto the face and let dry.

6. Crack two toothpicks in half so the picks can be folded into Vs but don't break in two. Glue each to a toothpick to make legs and feet, then poke through the bottom of the owl to secure.
